Get Involved with
Making Us Matter

We believe in moving theory into praxis.  From day one, we’ve been about that action!  Our programs run off the energy that only community can bring. Check out the ways you can be in action with us.

Teacher Training Program

Teachers are the core of the educational experience, and Making Us Matter is committed to equipping them with everything they need to succeed.
  • Professional Development Credits
        • Making Us Matter offers professional development credits for educators through the University of the Pacific’s Courses4Teachers program.
        • Learn more about our offerings here.
  • Making Us Matter’s Virtual Teaching Lab
        • The Virtual Teaching Lab provides educators a space to test new curricular ideas and hone their classroom skills. Additional dates are being planned for the Spring.
  • Curriculum Design
      • It is critical that all educators have the tools to develop and teach culturally responsive, inclusive curricula. We help teachers build class plans that center Black histories and Black identities in ways that inspires and engages students of all backgrounds.

Student Programming

Organizing summer programs for students is well underway. When it is safe to gather, Making Us Matter is eager to invite students for cohort-based College Preparation courses, including a tour to see East Coast HBCU campuses. Join our mailing list to receive updates on these programs as they develop.

Internship Program

Making Us Matter lives “by us, for us.” Our interns share their skills and perspectives as writers, designers, and social media content creators to help our work shine. Supervised by core Making Us Matter staff, these opportunities provide students in High School and College a chance to build their resumes, hone new skills, and give back to their communities. Positions are compensated with stipends or college credit to ensure they are accessible to all.

Educational Research

  • Making Us Matter works to ensure that the impact of our work extends beyond the classroom. Our founders and volunteers contribute to research papers presented at academic conferences, and draft policy best practices to ensure Black students and teachers receive the educational experiences they deserve.

2020 COVID-19 Classrooms

During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, educators and students struggled to adjust to a new normal. Making Us Matter stepped in to provide virtual educational programming that centered and celebrated Blackness as a supplement, or, in some cases, a replacement, for insufficient distance learning options. Students called into our Zoom classrooms from 10 different states to learn about Financial Literacy, Art History, Film and TV, Environmental Racism, Civil Law and more from passionate volunteer teachers.

Black Educology Mixtape (BE)

Our co-founders have been working in conjunction with peers from the University of San Francisco (USF) to create an all-access journal that centers Black education at all its intersections.  To learn more about our work with BE visit the website: https://blackeducology.org/ and check out our latest issue on the USF repository
